Mike Palmer
Hey there, thanks for considering me for this position! Please click around below to learn more about my background and skills.
Experience & Skills
Software
Adobe Suite: Heavy knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop and Lightroom. I have just about every shortcut committed to muscle memory. Also knowledgeable in InDesign, Premiere Pro, Acrobat and Media Encoder.
Mac: Very proficient to say the least. I have lots of experience using Keynote (aka the Mac PowerPoint) creating presentations and motion graphics.
WordPress: Highly skilled in setup, admin problem solving and publishing. I also have a background in web database work, so I can use advanced functions of creating database driven content and templated pages (very handy in creating a sermon library and event calendar). I am also very experienced at using the Divi UI that the NHUnited website runs on.
Mailchimp: I use this platform regularly and am very knowledgeable on design, but also advanced merge and automation features.
I ❤️ Spreadsheets: Yeah, I have a global shortcut to start a new google sheet with only two keystrokes. Sometimes you’re swimming in details, and it’s the fastest way to organize and share. Working with creative ideation, you need to create structure out of the nebulous to retain sanity.
Social Media & Email
Working for Stone for 20 years gave me lots of experience in this department. We had a strict policy of not advertising. That made personalized fan engagement paramount. I wrote and designed email newsletters back in the 90s, making sure to engage with fans in a friendly, humorous and relevant way that was respectful to the reader. When Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook came about I made sure we were early adopters to those platforms.
Writing
I’ve been writing for email newsletters, social media, press releases, event promotion, beer labels, websites and posters and flyers. I’ve had to wear many different hats and know how to switch my tone and style to fit the reader.
Whenever possible, I inject clever, humorous or just plain heartfelt and genuine writing into what I create. Increasingly our society doesn’t take the time to read things, and should always get a treat for doing so. If you can get people to look forward to reading your content, you can communicate much more effectively. Not to mention, it’s fun for both parties.
Photography
I love photography. I have several mirrorless cameras that I use with modern prime and zoom lenses, along with some adapted vintage lenses.
Design
I have 30 years of design experience. I can do print, web, apparel, packaging, video – you name it. I can pour over every little detail for hours to create the best designs I can take pride in. On the otherhand, I can really put the pedal to the metal and churn out things in record time when needed – while having a professional outcome that I can be proud of as well.
I geek out on the different types of printing processes and publishing. That knowledge makes me effective at delivering files that are good to print and can take advantage of opportunities that often go unused in the medium.
I am also a stickler for classic typography techniques in my work. Roman hanging punctuation, ligatures, smart punctuation and more. Not everyone knows the difference, but I do – and you gotta be proud of your work. 🙂
Web Publishing
I’ve been doing web publishing for over 25 years now. I am familiar with many iterations of web publishing software over the years.
My current platform of choice is the Divi UI running on WordPress (it’s what the NHUnited website runs on). I’m extremely knowledgeable on the system and interact with the developers of Divi regularly.
Things I can do:
- Make website mobile/tablet compliant
- SEO optimization, along with visitor analytics
- Integrate an event and calendaring system
- Make websites ADA complaint
- Create Instagram and other social feed integrations
- Create Mailchimp functions on a website
- Compression and publishing for video backgrounds or embeds
- You name it, if I don’t know how – I soon will

Well, that was a crazy ride. I was the fifth person on the staff page in 1996 and we grew to over 1,000 people when I left in 2016. I did a whole lot of everything at Stone. It got a bit off the rails toward the end, but I took a whole lot of pride in working for a place that strived to do the right thing above all else – and worked so closely with local charities and community groups. I enjoyed cultivating a fan culture of what I dubbed “beer drinking humanitarians” and a positive workgroup.
